WI Wins
The Clark County Health Department has partnered with Wisconsin Wins (WI Wins) to decrease the sale of tobacco products to youth. WI Wins works by having youth volunteers enter tobacco retailers and then attempt to purchase a tobacco product. If the establishment sells tobacco to the youth the local law enforcement is notified and the establishment may be fined. Information on checking identification and refusing to sell to minors is also provided to the manager and to the person who sold the product. If the establishment does not sell to the minor they are recognized in the community through media outreach. Since the launch of WI Wins in 2002 tobacco sales to minors have decreased rapidly. In 2009 there were 33 compliance checks done in Clark County. Of those 33 checks only 2 establishments sold a tobacco product to a minor. For more information visit www.wi wins.org/.
